How this guide works

We do not give you a list of questions to learn by heart. Real interviews do not work like that. An interviewer listens to you first, and then asks about what you said, deeper and deeper, until they find where your knowledge stops. You cannot learn that from a list. You can learn it from watching conversations, and then by practising your own.

So we start where a real application starts: with a job description. We read it together, line by line, and say honestly what it asks for, what it does not say, and who should apply. Then you see how the interviews for this role usually run. Then you follow five different people through the same interview, turn by turn, with notes on what the interviewer is checking, what works, and what goes wrong. At the end, you prepare for your own interview.

The company and the candidates are not real. The job description is a composite: we built it from the patterns that repeat in real Data Scientist postings. The conversations are examples, written from our experience of real interviews on both sides of the table.

Inside the guide

Part 1Read the job description

2 pages
  1. The job description

The Data Scientist job description that this guide uses, built from the patterns in real postings, and a first read to find the decisions that the job is really about.

    7 min
  2. Read it honestly

Which kind of Data Scientist job the Parlo posting really is, what it requires, what is only a wish, what it leaves out, who should apply, and the questions to ask the team.

Part 2How the interviews run

1 page
  1. How the interviews run

The five interviews in Parlo's process, the AI rules in each one, how a serious interviewer goes from what you say to the edge of what you know, and the product case that every candidate gets.

Part 3Five candidates, one role

5 pages

The same product case with five different people. Each conversation starts from how the candidate thinks, and goes deeper from there.

  1. The analyst

A product analyst with four years of A/B tests asks the best clarifying questions of the day, then reaches her edge on power and stopping early, and works through it honestly.

    21 min
  2. The economist

An economics PhD brings real causal-inference rigour to the Parlo case, but his first answer is a four-minute research plan, and the hardest question for him is "what would you tell Kenji on Friday?"

    21 min
  3. The career changer

A former language teacher with a bootcamp and one strong project meets the product case. Thandiwe finds a gap in statistics, and also the best question anyone asks about learning.

    20 min
  4. The modeller

A Kaggle Master with three years of machine learning reaches for a model before he asks what the decision is. Later he corrects the product manager on a p-value, politely and correctly.

    19 min
  5. The senior

A senior data scientist, laid off seven months ago, applies one level below his last job. Thandiwe finds his edge on how to measure learning, and asks him kindly whether he would stay.

Part 4Prepare for your own interview

  1. Prepare for your own interview

Turn what you saw in the five product cases into a plan for your own Data Scientist interviews - one analysis you can explain in depth, SQL you can check, statistics in plain words, a practised case, and an honest take-home.
